The Music and Education Research Group - MUSE, in operation since 2004, has as its main objective to develop research activities related to music teaching in diverse contexts. Music in formal, informal, and non-formal education is part of the research universe of this research group. The group's actions are directed to various research modalities, also covering university extension actions and teaching activities. In addition to the specific activities of each core work and ongoing research, the group maintains a permanent discussion among its members through face-to-face and virtual meetings. The MUSE Research Group conducted research on the training of music teachers in Brazil (2008 - 2013), through a project approved by the Education Observatory (Ministry of Education/CAPES/INEP/SECAD), publishing the results in the book “The preparation of music teachers in Brazil” (Fino Traço Press, 2014). Also noteworthy is the publication of “The Preparation of Music Teachers: A Global Perspective”, organized by Sérgio Figueiredo, José Soares and Regina F. Schambeck (Published by ANPPOM, 2015). In 2019 a new publication was launched by MUSE Research Group, entitled “Processes and Practices in Music Education” organized by Regina F. Schambeck, Sergio Figueiredo and Viviane Beineke (Fino Traço Press, 2019), presenting aspects related to the academic production (Master dissertations) of the PostGraduate Program in the field of Music Education.
The Research Group Music Education and Teacher Training positions itself in an impending place for studies and research, thus it intends to contribute to the progress in a given knowledge area. This comprises the development of investigations in music education with the focus on the teacher’s education and teaching practice, and favoring themes such as pedagogical practices, knowledge and professional development, learning-to-teach processes, practices of school music and international and cross-cultural studies. Various theoretical and methodological approaches are the foundation of, and enriches, this field of study.
The purpose of the Study and Research Group "INVENTA - música, infância e educação" [INVENTA - music, childhood and education] is to consolidate the conduction of studies and research that bring together music, childhood, creativity and education, focused on the production of knowledge in the field of music education. The interactions between music education and studies on childhood and creative learning can support the construction of theoretical and methodological frameworks for music education with children in different formal and informal contexts, as well as the education of teachers to work in music teaching in elementary school and other contexts.
This group was founded in March 2004 and brings together researchers from the areas of musicology/ethnomusicology, composition, and musical interpretation, therefore involving studies of a historical/cultural, aesthetic, analytical, compositional, and performance nature. In musicological studies, MusiCS researchers conduct conferences and write papers and other publications focusing on general musicology, especially historical musicology and ethnomusicology, and directly related fields such as history, anthropology, rhetoric, and philosophy. Regarding research in composition and performance, MusiCS researchers compose and perform concerts, both based on the reflections and analyses of their research. Creating original compositions is dedicated to experimental and contemporary repertoire, and musical performances are from a wide range of repertoire such as early music and folk music involving historically informed performance.
Together the various research focuses developed in the Musicial-Instrumental Processes Group form a comprehensive overview of activities related to musical interpretation. Research areas investigate technical-interpretive issues and their interaction with instrumental practice, through cognitive studies and research in the area of music analysis. The Group seeks to develop new interdisciplinary fields investigating interactions of factors and aspects that intervene in the process of knowledge acquisition. Research encompasses both practice and music theory, in its different forms, as well as scientific experiments (qualitative and quantitative research). Research results have been disseminated in national and international scientific events and academic publications. In addition, there is a close relationship between the research content and the elaboration of undergraduate and graduate subjects taught by the Group's participating teachers, and also in artistic productions of the researchers, teachers and students linked to the Group.
