Forward Reservoir Modeling and Calibration: Improvements, Innovations, and Incorporation of Dynamic Data - Forward 2
This project aims to develop a set of tools to enhance forward stratigraphic modeling (SFM) by integrating regionalized and production data. The goal is to improve reservoir calibration and flow simulation using simulators like DionisosFlow, SedSimple, and GPM. The project seeks to automate processes, create new features for parameterization and calibration, and test and compare different forward models in real fields from Petrobras, optimizing reservoir connectivity and performance prediction.

Calibration of Forward Reservoir Models with Well Data - Forward 1
Traditionally, geological reservoir characterization studies are carried out in three stages: stratigraphic modeling, sedimentological modeling, and the development of the petrophysical model. However, for the Aptian carbonate reservoirs in the Santos Basin, the use of seismic attributes in reservoir characterization is limited due to low seismic resolution and the great depth of the reservoirs. Thus, an alternative stratigraphic modeling method is required to improve the predictive potential of geological models. Considering that the evolution of a carbonate platform is strongly controlled by stratigraphic attributes (e.g., base-level variation, subsidence rate, carbonate production), it is possible to adopt geological process simulation techniques to predict the external geometry of sedimentary bodies. Forward geological process modeling is based on principles of mass and energy conservation to simulate geological (physical and chemical) processes responsible for the infill of a sedimentary basin. However, this type of modeling is not designed to honor well data, which are integrated manually, potentially becoming costly and inefficient depending on the number of wells. The goal is to develop a methodology, algorithm, and calibration techniques to adjust forward models to well data. Funder: Petrobras, ANP

Improvements In The Calibration Of Forward Models For Flow Simulations And CO₂ Storage
Recent advancements in petroleum reservoir modeling have demonstrated the potential of using forward modeling to construct models suitable for fluid flow simulation and CO₂ storage assessment. This topic was addressed in a previous research project by the proponents, funded by a production company in Brazil, which aimed to develop a tool for calibrating models to well data. This proposal seeks to improve aspects related to the optimization of existing objective functions for this type of calibration, as well as to create computational tools for automating the process. Another important contribution of the project is expected in the transformation of forward models into reservoir models, which will support simulations of petroleum fluid flow and evaluations of CO₂ storage conditions dissolved in the water of deep aquifers.
